It has been a quiet month racing wise with only 8 runners for two winners and two 2nd placings.
Killarney Kid started off the month on a good note with a win on 6th April at Ellerslie over 2100m, his form has been sound over the staying distances this time in and he has since departed for Peter Moody’s stable in Melbourne, we wish owner David Paykel all the best with him there.
Chaprise earned a well-deserved win on 8th April for her Australian owners Peter & David Sinn & Michael Smith at Waipa over 1580m. She was ridden by Alysha Collett on an apprentice rider’s day. Based on that effort she should be able to win a few more races with the easing of the tracks. She has since had a setback with a stone bruise but is back on track again.
After winning his maiden over 1600m at Avondale in March Bachelor Brave travelled to Dargaville on 17th April to race over 1800m. He got back in the race and battled home late to run 6th. His next start was to be at Avondale on the 27th however the races were abandoned so he will now run at Avondale on 8th May over 2100m.
Bellino had his first run this preparation at Tauranga on 11th April, the track was heavy and he finished 5 of 5 runners over 1400m as to be expected given the track conditions and distance. He too was to run at Avondale but we will now look to run him next at Rotorua on 9th May over 1560m.
Coachline ran a lovely race for 2nd at Ellerslie on 18th April over 2200m, he has pulled up well and will head to Te Rapa on 2nd May over 2100m and/or the Rotorua Cup on 9th May over 2200m.
Proud Life raced at Te Aroha on 4th April over 2200m finishing 6th. She has had a freshen up and will look to race next at Te Rapa 2nd May over 1600m or possibly Matamata on 6th May over 2100m.
After being plagued by bad draws and unsuitable tracks Raadical Jazz lined up at Te Aroha on 29th April over 1400m on a heavy track. He drew the outside barrier and was entitled to blow out but ran home very well to finish 2nd. He should be improved by the outing as it has been a month since his previous start.
Mills N Boon ran a nice 3rd first up at Avondale in March, she lined up at Te Aroha on 29th April over 1200m. Getting back in the big field she ran home nicely in the heavy conditions to finish 5th.
Biggin Hill last raced at Ellerslie in March finishing 4th over 1200m, he has had a freshen up and will look to race again at Avondale on the 8th May over 1200m.
Primrose Hill was due to have make her debut run at Avondale on the 27th, she will now be nominated for Avondale on 8th May over 1400m.
Our Kismet returned to the stable on 1st April, she has done well during her brief spell with Bob & Helen Hackett. She may race at Matamata on 6th May over 1400m.
Suad has had some issues with her breathing but appears to be back on track and shouldn’t be far away from a trial.
Queen of Cool has been enjoying her work on the softer tracks, she is due to trial shortly.
After a lengthy break So Wotif appears to be over his foot issues and is also not far away from a trial.
Tavistock/Beauty Queen will look to trial shortly.
He’s A Big Deel & Jesshanimo have been getting through plenty of mileage during April in preparation for racing on the upcoming winter tracks.
Ventura has been set back, battling a cold and has been only been working quietly the past couple of weeks.
The Hawk has been back in work since mid-February and looks a much stronger horse this time in.
Les Silk resumed back in our stable on 13th April from a spell and pre training at Cambria Park. She looks in lovely condition. She will appreciate the winter tracks coming up.
A newcomer to the stable on 16th April was the 2yo Perfectly Ready – Cataari gelding for new owners Terry Shaw, Henry Wilcox, Warren Gatland and Lorraine Craig.
Hot Mustard is currently in work in Sydney. He looks in great condition and should be stepping out in a trial or mid week race in the near future.
Lady Royale has had a throat operation for a breathing problem which has curtailed her for much of her 3yo season.
Shanzou completed his groundwork here with us and has since gone to Paul Stevens in Matamata for barrier education and trialing prior to returning to racing over winter.
City boy & El Escolta were both shin sore after a trial and jump out and are currently with Russell Rogers in Cambridge on the water walker.
Yearlings –
Swiss Ace – Princess Carolina gelding (Arthur Avis) and Swiss Ace – Sacrista gelding (partnership to be completed includes Carol Findlay, Barry Jensen, Julian Ede, Pat Fruin & Carol Kidd) both have been broken in and had two weeks education at Counties track, they are due to spell now.
Man of Power – Ocean Run gelding (Brian Mollet) has also been broken in and completed two weeks education at Counties track.
Choisir – Folk Music filly (currently being syndicated) and Myboycharlie – Mellow Elle filly (Joanne Sims) are progressing well, being ridden round our home track.
Testa Rossa – Taunt Pauline colt and Domesday – Orpenalla colt are into their second week, mouthing and lunging in the round yard.
The Domesday colt is a half-brother to a previous stable winner, Colonel Greer who died after winning his second start, he was very promising. He will be raced by myself and Leigh Crockford who raced Colonel Greer.
The Testa Rossa colt will be the first publicly syndicated horse in the stable.
Captain Rio – Pyrate Princess colt (Keith Oddy) has been broken in and arrived this week for a short stint at Pukekohe track to complete his education.
